Food and Entertainment

Something delicious...

is cooking every Trade Days weekend in the Original First Monday Park. Whether you're looking for something healthy or that special treat you've been anticipating all week, there's something to please every taste. And for those shoppers looking for a little entertainment with their meal, they are sure to find it in the Original First Monday Park.

At the Baked Potatoe Restaurant, retired Dallas Firefighter Jerry "Zip" Crawford sings country-western tunes while he cuts and fries potatos, and grills burgers and chicken from the restaurant's back porch. Restaurant owner Kenneth Pruitt of Canton says Crawford can carry a good tune and fry a perfect potato all at the same time. "Now, that takes real talent," Pruitt said.

And in case you might be wondering...Pruitt says he knows the word "potatoe" is spelled incorrectly on his sign. But the folks he bought the restaurant from spelled it that way on purpose in honor of former vice presidential candidate Dan Quayle, who gained some notoriety back in the 1980s for his mis-spelling of the word in front of a bunch of school children and the national press. Pruitt said the tale of his sign is kept in circulation by First Monday old-timers, determined not to forget the colorful history of the Original First Monday Park -- a Texas landmark.
